Housekeeping – Part Time

Part Time

The primary purpose of this position is to perform daily and scheduled housekeeping duties such as wet or damp floor mopping, carpet vacuuming, wall washing, restroom cleaning, dusting, polishing and other typical housekeeping duties for the purpose of infection control and aesthetic value. To be aware of the part that proper housekeeping procedures will take in the control of infection in the health care facility.


  1. Use of housekeeping equipment such as mops, squeegees, buffers, polishers, automatic scrubbers and vacuums required for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets and furniture.
  2. Empty wastebaskets, trash containers, damp dust furniture and fixtures and wash mirrors and windows.
  3. Replace paper supplies, hand soap and other restroom supplies.
  4. Terminally clean rooms used for patients with infections.
  5. Prepare vacated rooms for use.
  6. Help in building security by checking for unlocked doors and unauthorized occupants.
  7. May be requested to do some exterior work such as cleaning sidewalks, removing litter and sweeping entrances.
  8. Perform additional duties as requested.
  9. To understand the principle that proper dilution and use of cleaning agents along with mechanical scrubbing are essential in decreasing microbial count on environmental objects.
  10. Store resident’s clothing.
  11. Assist residents with packing when transferred or discharged.
  12. Understand the following principles of Infection Control related to their job:
    1. Changing of mop water every four (4) rooms and after Isolation Rooms.
    2. Wash hands when going from dirty to clean and upon entering and leaving room.
    3. Proper dilution of cleaning agents being used.
    4. Keep soiled items from touching uniform.
    5. Wear disposable gloves when attempting to clean a grossly contaminated area.
    6. Proper attire prior to entering a patient’s room who is in isolation.
    7. Make sure no medical procedure is being attempted when initiating or continuing housekeeping duties because of the increase in the number of airborne organisms that will occur as a result of cleaning procedure.
    8. Prevent overflow of waste containers at bedside and in bathroom.
    9. Studies have shown that HIV is inactivated rapidly after being exposed to commonly used chemicals, germicides at concentrations that are much lower than used in practice. Embalming fluids are similar to the types of chemical germicides completely inactive HIV. Also, Bleach 1:10 dilution of household bleach will inactivate.
    10. Extensive study on the survival of HIV virus shows drying process inactivates HIV depending on room temperature and colony count.
    11. The act of scrubbing plays as important an role in disinfecting in Housekeeping as the type of product used.
    12. Gloves must be worn in cleaning large spills (urine, blood, etc.).

  3. Must be willing to perform the same duties day-after-day in a courteous, cheerful manner.
  4. Must have initiative and good judgment.
  5. Must become familiar with physical arrangement of the facility.
  6. Must be neat in appearance at all times.
  7. Must have a solid understanding of technique and principles of infection control in housekeeping.
  8. Must be willing to submit to a pre-employment physical, drug test and BCI.
